The Challenge
A technology business had developed a well-established commercial position in its home market and was beginning to explore whether a European expansion made sense. The opportunity looked credible at a surface level, but leadership had not yet examined what the move would require in commercial terms. There was uncertainty about whether local demand was substantial enough to support entry, how buyers in the new market made decisions and which route into market offered the strongest chance of early traction.
The business needed an honest assessment of the opportunity before committing further resources.
Leclair Team's Remit
Leclair Team was engaged to carry out a structured market assessment. The scope covered commercial demand in the target market, channel options, buyer behaviour and the key considerations that would affect whether entry was viable at this stage. The assessment included analysis of a market estimated to be worth approximately £220 million annually, alongside a review of the competitive and commercial conditions affecting entry.
Our Approach
We began by examining the demand conditions in the target market. That involved a detailed review of how comparable propositions had performed, where adoption was strongest and where potential barriers existed. We then assessed the available routes into market, including direct approaches and partner-led models, evaluating the commercial implications of each. A review of 4 potential market entry routes identified 2 commercially viable options that aligned with the client's objectives and available resources.
Alongside this, the team examined the competitive landscape to understand what the client would be entering. The review covered 18 established competitors and emerging market participants, helping to identify areas where the client's proposition could achieve stronger differentiation. We identified where established players held strong positions and where there were gaps that the business could address. That analysis fed into a clearer picture of where the proposition would find the most receptive buyers.
For the final stage, Leclair Team brought the findings together into a decision-ready view for the leadership team. Rather than a broad market report, the output was structured around the specific choices facing the business.
The Outcome
The client left the engagement with a sharper view of the opportunity and a stronger basis for an internal decision. The assessment identified 2 viable routes into market, highlighted a customer segment representing around 63% of addressable demand, and flagged the conditions that would need to be in place before the expansion proceeded.
Leadership was able to take a more informed position into its next planning review, bringing forward a go/no-go decision by approximately 3 months compared with the original expansion timetable.
